Fraud Awareness
As mentioned above, please remember, although natural disasters tend to bring out the best in people, they can also provide opportunities for scammers to take advantage of the situation. Unfortunately, during and after events like this, there's often an increase in fraudulent activity aimed at exploiting individuals during recovery efforts.
Please remain vigilant and cautious over the next few weeks. Here are five common scams to watch out during and after the hurricane:
- Fake Charities and Donation Scams
Scammers may impersonate well-known charities or create fake ones to solicit donations. Be wary of unsolicited requests for donations via email, phone, or social media. Always verify the legitimacy of any charity by visiting their official website or using reputable platforms like Charity Navigator. - Imposter Government Agencies
Scammers may pretend to be representatives from FEMA or other government agencies offering aid, recovery assistance, or claiming that you owe money. Remember, government agencies will never ask for sensitive personal information (like Social Security numbers) or payments over the phone or email. - Fraudulent Home Repair Contractors
In the aftermath of a hurricane, fraudulent contractors may offer quick repairs for a deposit, only to disappear without completing the work. Always research contractors before hiring them. Ask for proper licensing, insurance, and references, and avoid paying large upfront fees for work that hasn't begun. - Phishing Emails and Texts
Expect an uptick in phishing emails and texts posing as local authorities, insurance companies, or relief organizations. These messages may contain malicious links or attachments aimed at stealing your personal or financial information. Be cautious about opening attachments or clicking on links from unknown senders. - Price Gouging and Fake Supply Offers
Some scammers may offer hard-to-find supplies (such as water, generators, or building materials) at inflated prices or create fake online listings. Stick to trusted retailers or local suppliers and report any price gouging to authorities.

- Make sure your online banking username and password are up to date.
- Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, important documents, and cash.
- Create a Family Emergency Plan: Discuss evacuation routes, meeting points, and communication plans with family members.
- Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates and alerts from reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and local authorities.
- Secure Your Home:
- Install Storm Shutters: Use them to protect windows and glass doors.
- Trim Trees and Shrubs: Remove dead branches and secure loose objects.
- Reinforce Garage Doors: Make sure they are sturdy and can withstand strong winds.
- Know Your Evacuation Zone: Understand if you live in a mandatory evacuation zone and plan your evacuation route.
- Follow Evacuation Orders: If local authorities advise evacuation, do so immediately.
- Stay Indoors: Find a small, windowless room on the lowest level of your home. Avoid windows and glass doors.
- Use a Battery-Powered Radio: Stay updated on the storm’s progress and emergency instructions.
- Avoid Floodwaters: Do not walk, swim, or drive through flooded areas. The water can be contaminated or electrically charged.
- Maintain Communication: Keep your phone charged and conserve battery. Use text messages or social media to communicate when possible.
- Stay Informed: Continue to listen to weather updates and instructions from local authorities.
- Avoid Hazards:
- Downed Power Lines: Stay away from them and report them to the power company.
- Floodwaters: Avoid them as they may be contaminated.
- Damaged Buildings: Be cautious when re-entering your home and check for structural damage.
- Use Generators Safely: Operate generators outdoors and away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Document Damage: Take photos of any property damage for insurance claims.
- Help Neighbors: Check on elderly or disabled neighbors who may need assistance.
By following these safety tips, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your property during hurricane season. Stay prepared and stay safe!
